"Did we make history or did history make us?" was the question that inspired my writing The Girls from Winnetka, about women raised with 50's values who nonetheless left a legacy of choices to the next generation.

Background Information

A New York Times, London Times, and Dublin Times bestselling author, I've written two successful nonfiction books about women: Living with the Kennedys: The Joan Kennedy Story and Ordinary Women, Extraordinary Lives.  I've been a guest on The Today Show, Larry King, Inside Edition, and numerous other television and radio shows.                      After a divorce in the late 70's, my children and I moved from the South Shore of Boston back to the city into the same building where Joan Kennedy lived.  We became friends.  When she needed help, fortunately this was just after I'd received a graduate degree from Harvard, with her role in Ted's campaign in 1980 for the Democratic nomination, she asked me to be her Executive Assistant.  From that remarkable experience came my first book, Living with the Kennedys: The Joan Kennedy Story.              As a result of my work with Joan and getting to know her, I wondered why and how some people are able to not only overcome but make their lives better as a result of overwhelming circumstances.  That question turned into my second book, Ordinary Women, Extraordinary Lives, which profiles eight women.             Before Ordinary Women, Extraordinary Lives came out, several girlfriends from New Trier in Winnetka, Illinois, gathered on Cape Cod to celebrate turning fifty.  We shared from the heart about being raised with 50s values and rules, the impact those had on us, and what had happened to each of us since then.  We were fascinated by how we had lived with and/or moved past those rules and what we had achieved in spite of them.  After Judy asked, "Did we make history or did history make us?" we thought there should be a book about our generation.  Five women's honest, touching stories became my newest book, The Girls from Winnetka.              Ann-Margret, a friend from high school and a sorrority sister at college, wrote the Foreword and said, "Marcia has captured the essence of their struggles, losses, and victories.  Though two classes behind the girls at the same high school, I was right there with them."
