J.J. grew up in a small town in central New York, where her first two novels are set. Growing up, J.J. hated high school; now she writes about it.

After graduating from Binghamton University, J.J. coordinated programs such as The Learning Web and Youth Advocacy, hooking teens up with work that (1) mattered to them, and (2) made a positive change in the world. In 2001, she earned a Master of Education from Harvard University, with a concentration in Adolescent Risk and Prevention.
She lives in Durham, North Carolina.
