An Alaskan for 40 years, Miller retired in 2004 and moved to Colorado to care for his mother who had Alzheimer's disease.

Background Information

Bob Miller worked in journalism, political consulting, communications, marketing and public relations in Nebraska and Alaska, where he lived for 40 years. Miller grew up in Cozad, Nebraska, and also lived in Hastings, Nebraska, where he was a reporter for the Hastings Tribune before going to Alaska with the U. S. Army in 1964. He stayed in Alaska after his discharge from the Army, and began working in journalism. Subsequently, he became press secretary to Gov. Keith H. Miller (no relation) and in 1970 became public affairs manager for the trans-Alaska oil pipeline construction project. Following pipeline construction, Miller became a political and communications consultant, and for three years was executive director of the Alaska Tourism Marketing Council. From 1992 until his retirement in 2004, he was director of public affairs for the University of Alaska statewide system. With a lifelong interest in journalism, history and politics, Miller looked forward to retirement so he could spend as much time as he wanted traveling and writing. His plans changed when his mother got Alzheimer's disease, and as an only child he felt a deep commitment to caring for her as she had always cared for him and others she loved. Miller decided to share the story of his family's life against the backdrop of Alzheimer's disease. He lives in Longmont, Colorado.
