I'm a college lecturer from the UK and enjoy writing scifi, horror and fantasy(in that order).
I've been writing for roughly twenty years. I've had several shorts and novellas published as well as science fiction novel "Dragon" come out in October 2013. I have two more novels comiming out this year,

Information
The enjoyment I get from writing comes from creating worlds, characters and life or death situations. The more exciting I can make a tale and the more removed I can make it from every day life the better. I do like to explore the human condition and also politics - the relentless march towards one world goverment and corporatocracy (conspiracy theories fascinate and intrigue me) but these are always firmly in the context of speculative fiction.
The writers who have influenced me most in horror are H. P. Lovecraft and Clive Barker. The first because of the former's gothic style prose and creation of cosmic horror and the latter because I stand in awe of his dark imagination and prose. To me Barker is the hard core version of Dennis Wheatley. I have a horror novel out this year called "Balec" which would never have been written without the inspiration of these two.
In science fiction there are so many writers I could name, Bob Shaw, Larry Niven, Robert Heinlein, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov but the single most influential books I have read are the Dune series by Frank Herbert. Dune, Dune Messiah and God Emperor of Dune rank as my favourite reads of all time. Edgar Rice Burroughs comes in second but not a close second.
