I worked in the child welfare arena for more than 25 years, most of them as a government social worker. After early retirement was tantalizingly offered, I retired in March 2002. A couple of months later, I went to work as a program manager for an eclectic urban social service agency, The Purpose Society, an agency I had been associated with as a volunteer for a couple of decades. For a year and a half I managed the HIV-Aids program as well as a couple of youth based street and school programs.
When I left the Lower Mainland in December 2003, and retired to Denman Island, I continued as a long-distance member of the Board of The Lower Mainland Purpose Society until 2010
Since arriving on Denman, my activities, more or less, have fallen into five general categories:
Writing whatever strikes my fancy; Most recently, self- publishing my first novel, Like a Child to Home;
Writing, until quite recently, a reasonably regular, mostly humorous column in the Denman Island Monthly Magazine, The Flagstone, on gentrification;
Other community work-e.g.: Currently I am Chair of the Hornby Denman Community Health Care Society.
Library volunteer ( we have a small volunteer library on the Island...5000 volumes)
Sustenance activities such as watching film noir, cooking because I love food, gardening when directed, social activism, as well as political and spiritual engagement –in moderation and only when the mood strikes, singing in the shower, biking very short distances, ping pong when I can scare up a game and, on occasion, creative indolence.
