The first person inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame.

Background Information

As a rock band roadie in San Francisco, I had one of the best rock 'n' roll adventures of the 20th Century.  I workied with the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Byrds, Credence Clearwater Revival, Santana and the like. That's not what my book is about.  I also had the best bicycle adventure of the 20th Century.  In the '70s I led a ragged group of hippie bicycle enthusiasts in an eclectic hobby of modifying old bikes from the '30s and then racing them down steep hills on dirt roads. Later we started building bikes specific to the purpose.  My friend Gary Fisher and I started a business in a rented garage in 1979 to sell these bikes.  We called it MountainBikes. Within three years our design had been copied by every major bicycle company in trhe world, and our company name became the generic name for the sport. In 1980 I started publishing what became the first magazine for mountain bikers, the Fat Tire Flyer.  It was the first documentaton of the new sport, and the title of my book. When the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame was established in 1986, I was the first person inducted. When mountain bike racving became an Olympic sport in 1996, the rules were the ones I wrote in 1983.
