Grit and determination can be an interesting mix when blended with youthful naivety and occasional gross stupidity. I left formal education at the age of fifteen, was married at the age of eighteen and the father of three girls by my late twenties - all by choice. I made my own way, insisting my wife should be a stay-at-home mom. We had a little house and a mortgage (guaranteed by my father) from the get-go and I worked my way up the employment chain from chief sweeper-upper in a warehouse, through selling encyclopedias door-to-door, retail sales, sales management and eventually to sales directorship for two of the best-known brands in the UK furniture industry. Recessions and industry closures due to the formidable growth of furniture imports, had me bouncing from job-to-job for quite a while, whilst fathering what were now three teenage daughters and caring for my wife of some forty years as she struggled with clinical depression, a hard-fought battle that she eventually lost to suicide in 2006. But somewhere amidst all that, I was compelled to write - a novel that began with a single sentence on a clip board ... "There wasn't much to say." Why I wrote those words, I had no idea, but felt compelled to continue. The writing had to be sporadic - on trains - in hotel rooms - in moments of rare, quiet solitude. Twenty-five or more years later, the work was complete, and 'White Ashes' was born.

Critique: An impressively written and complex saga, "White Ashes" is an absorbingly entertaining read from beginning to end and showcases author John D. Moulton as an exceptionally gifted novelist. Very highly recommended for community library General Fiction collections.
