Mark was born in NYC, raised in Pittsburgh, and spent a year at Kansas City Art Institute before heading to New York, where he was a part of the arts and video scene. He has lived in Los Angeles since 1988. The idea for this book came out of the research he did on the Lewis and Clark expedition for an audio tour he made for a museum in Great Falls, Montana. (Lewis and Clark did have an adventure, but compared to some of the hair-raising stories Mark found, they were lucky and got off easy.)
