Following in the style of the late Erma bombeck, his book, outlining the sometimes serious, sometimes very humorous trip by a young man to his therapists couch, spouts off about various problems,, relatives, friends and best of all, his employment at a community college. This book has many characters that were taken from Mertens imagination coupled with some of humourous twists that Mertens remembers of his own relatives and their fun action and responses to others as life goes on.

WR Mertens is an educator with fifteen plus years of teaching experience in both the public and private sectors. He began his career working with people as a campus police officer while in college. Working with people and getting to understand people are some of the attributes which best defines, how to figure people out. How they work. What they think. What makes them do, what they do? Mr Mertens is an adjunct faculty member at two local colleges in Illinois, an adjunct facilitator at a major Illinois university and a full time teacher in northwestern Indiana.

A childrens book by WR Mertens has been released in January 2003 titled: "Pumpkins Adventure-His Vacation at the L'Grande Internationale Hotel". A continuation of "Don't Call Me A Cab! Call Me A Therapist!", under the recently released title of "ONE IS ME! is now available, which chronicles the continuation of people meetings in lifes vast jungle.
