As a naive young priest, Father Uhl believed and preached the standard Catholic beliefs and traditions for almost ten years after his ordination. Then, following much study, meditation, and a near fatal accident, he realized he had become a sincere agnostic about the old supernatural "truths" learned in his pre-rational youth. On leaving the Benedictine monastery and priesthood, he earned his Ph.D. in psychology. His private practice thrived as he enjoyed helping his clients shuck their old guilts and fears--as he taught them to drop their harmful habits and outdated superstitions. His book, Out of God's Closet: This Priest Psychologist Chooses Friendly Atheism, shows how thinking persons can likewise enjoy the enlightened selfishness that drives them to make our shared world more friendly; thoughtful, enlightened selfishness, without any supernatural supervision, makes a modified Golden Rule most practical for our small planet.
