Max made visits to the Czech Republic during the 1990s which culminated in a year spent living and teaching in a South Bohemian town, as well as a book, Touching Velvet, documenting the experience. He has now completed a travel literature book on Estonia, entitled The Indrawn Heart, published in November 2013 by Lakeshore Press, New Hampshire, USA, who specialise in books on Estonia.  Max is of part Estonian origin, and The Indrawn Heart incorporates an enquiry into the reputedly introspective Estonian national character, an interest which prompted Max's journey around Estonia. The book's title derives from a poem by tragic Estonian writer Juhan Liiv.
