I practice general psychiatry and specialize in psychopharmacology and mood and anxiety disorders. Over the years, I have seen Bipolar Disorder misunderstood and mistreated  often. Much of what is published for patients and their families is either incorrect or too vague to be helpful, so I put together my own book Rollercoaster about unstable mood disorders for patients, families, mental health professionals, nonpsychiatric physicians and other health professionals. My inspiration was Dr. David Sheehans' The Anxiety Disease about Panic Disorder. This is a wonderful desription for patients about what it is like to suffer from this illness. I have often found it helpful to discuss with patients as we diagnose their symptoms. Similarly, Rollercoaster was written to include fictional but clinically accurate stories of patients and their symptoms and treatments that compliment to medical explanations. It has been very well received. I look forward to writing more about medicine but also about human relations on large scales as well as fiction that supports principles of human dynamics I wish to share.

I received my B.A. in Biology from Austin College
in Sherman, Texas, and my M.D. degree from the University of Texas
Medical Branch (UTMB), Galveston. I was Chief Resident in
Psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston
and have been honored as a Laughlin Fellow and member of the American
College of Psychiatrists. A Distinguished Fellow of the American
Psychiatric Association, I have also served as President of the Central
Neuropsychiatric Association. I live and practice psychiatry in
Austin, Texas where I am also Adjunct Clinical Faculty for the Austin Medical Education Program/UTMB Department of Psychiatry.
