Carlos Alonzo Perez was born in 1966 in La Colonia Baja California, in Mexicali, Mexico. In 1971 his family immigrated to a small town in Sanger, California where he spent the rest of his childhood. In 1983, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and has been serving on active duty ever since.
Carlos Alonzo Perez grew up like most other immigrant children. He struggled to learn two languages simultaneously while attending school with the other immigrant kids from his neighborhood. And like most other immigrant children, he watched as his parents worked long, arduous, hours in jobs most people did not want. Carlos’ life wasn’t any different; most kids lived the same way he did (well at least in his neighborhood).
In 1983 during his senior year at Sanger High School, Carlos Perez enlisted in the Marine Corps. After seeing his older brother enlist and attend Army boot camp, Carlos wanted nothing more than to be like his brother, except he wanted to be better, so he enlisted in the Marines. After attending Marine Corps boot camp in 1984, he knew that he had found a calling and 24 years later, he now holds the rank of Sergeant Major, the highest enlisted rank in the Marine Corps.
Carlos Perez’ father and mother live in Dinuba, California near Carlos’ sister. His older brother lives in Fresno, California and his younger brother (a former Marine and veteran of Desert Storm) lives in Sanger.
Carlos Perez returned from Iraq in November of 2007 where he served with the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines in the Anbar Province. Upon completion of his tour, he was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement. He is currently serving as the Sergeant Major for Marine Corps Recruiting Station San Antonio, Texas. Carlos Perez plans on retiring with his wonderful family in the beautiful city of San Antonio.
