I realized at an early age I would one day fulfill my dream and publish my writings and drawings.
My work is inspired by the lyrical genius of John Lennon, the nonsensical writings of Lewis Carroll, and the colorful magic of Walt Disney. In 2004 I decided to write and draw for children. Life is Good & Other Reasons For Rhyme was my first book.
Nearly 30 years ago while sitting at home with pen and paper in hand, these two lines popped in my head
“A strange place this Land of Reverse,
Where first is last and last is first.
From there I proceeded to write 30 more verses of rhyme. Over the years, and after many revisions to the poem, The Land of Reverse was finally turned into a story.
The main character Sam was inspired by my many conversations with the kids I have coached. As a baseball coach and hitting instructor I would get kids on the field and in the batting cage that were not performing to what I knew to be their potential. I would ask them why they were underperforming and more times than not they said they were tired.
When I dug deeper they had many reasons for being tired:
“I was up late doing homework.”
“I had soccer practice, music lessons and then basketball.”
“I got up early to finish my homework because I was too tired to do it last night.
As a writer and illustrator, I conjured the character of Sam, an overbooked kid that is too wound up to get to sleep at night. Thus, the story was born.
