From grade school on the battlefield at Gettysburg to Jr. and Sr. High in the once US capital city of York PA, Ms. Bell developed an intense fascination for the absense of women in accounts of the historic places and events famous in Franklin, Adams and York Counties. The current result of which is FIXIN' THINGS, a novel of women at Gettysburg © Feb. 2002 Later study in history and psychology led Ms. Bell to Sappho, The Lesbian, The Poetess, as Homer was The Poet, a woman whose literary genius so frightened men that they systematically destroyed all copies of her nine published books, leaving a scant 144 lines - few of which are complete. From these fragmented lines, Ms. Bell created a novel rich in the textures of ancient Greece, yet modern as tomorrow's fashions. In Peggy Ullman Bell's PSAPPHA © 2000, Sappho's own words and phrases enhance the fabric of the story like sparkling threads woven so delicately into an intricate tapestry that it becomes impossible to distinguish the imported threads from the weaver's own. Recently augmented and re-released, Ms. Bell's fictionalized biography of the ancient poet continues to add music as SAPPHO SINGS in her own words throughout the lively narrative.
