My first publsihed novel, THE PASSION OF MARYAM (Plain View Press, 2007) is a dramatic reconsideration of the Virgin Mother and her relationship with her enigmatic son. It emerged from a childhood in a devout and searching Christian home, and is a religiously challenging but spiritually rewarding narrative. The novel received two notable awards: 2007 USA Book News Best Books "Award Finalist" in the category of "Fiction & Literature: Religious Fiction." And 2008 “Award Winner” in the “Wild Card” category of the Hollywood Book Festival.   My current novel is FAR STONES (Northloop Books, 2017), which tells of preteen African-American twin boys on the 1860s Texas frontier orphaned in an Indian raid, one of whom is captured, the other of whom begins a decades long search for him, as the early game of baseball binds them throughout. The book was inspired by S.C. Gwynne's EMPIRE OF THE SUMMER MOON and my own interest in explicating a little-known chapter of African-Americans on the Western frontier--and a lifelong fascination with the national pastime. The novel has received critical acclaim by Foreword and Kirkus Reviews and Amazon and Goodreads.   Since service as an Army medical officer in the Vietnam War era, I have had a practice as a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. My artist wife and I live in Southern Californis —she is an extremely talented artist who did the novel’s cover—have two children and a grandson. In addition to time with family, my practice, and writing, I play trumpet and baritone horn and keep my Chinese-knockoff Vespa running.
