BIOGRAPHY OF REV FR. SYLVESTER CHUKWUDI OYEKA BY MUM
Rev Fr. Sylvester Chukwudi Oyeka was born at 9:45am on the 27th of July, 1976 at St Camillus Catholic hospital Uromi in Edo state. This young man was delivered miraculously, after a short and less painful labour and the very morning the father went for teachers’ salary as the headmaster of his school. Peacefully he came into this mundane existence; Sylvester has maintained this peaceful life which marks his birth; a life devoid of grudges, discrimination or fight and other forms of discords. His peers love him dearly. Men and women who encountered him personally talked much of his astonishing way of life. In view of this people were not surprised at his entrance into the seminary, it was only a confirmation of what they had in mind for Sylvester and they only testified that the young man has gotten a suitable place for his glittering personality.
Rev Fr. Sylvester Chukwudi is my last born, but even at that he wouldn't allow anybody to pet him and he is known for his diligence in whatever that is assigned to him and often takes initiative to carry out other tasks for the good of the family. Chukwudi started growing up as a humble and gentle boy. He began his primary school education in September, 1982 and graduated in 1988. He made a good result and this earned him a good recommendation by the school authority. He was admitted in January, 1989 in Esan Grammar School Uromi, Edo state for his secondary education. In 1991, Chukwudi wrote his junior certificate examination and made the best result in his school, this earned him a scholarship from the Old Boys association of the school.
Chukwudi’s entire life is surrounded by mysterious events and as a mother I reflected over these but I discovered that I could comprehend just little because of my myopic knowledge. One day, while he was going to school one morning he was knocked down by thunder while riding his bicycle, this was a traumatic experience to little Chukwudi, he needed to understand the reasons behind these amazing experience. People around who saw what happened were traumatized by this experience; they thought that the little boy was dead. They actually came to see his lying body but were all amazed when they saw that the presumed dead body was alive i.e. hale and hearty. They wondered what this might be considering this miraculous event because that same fateful day a man died of thunder storm.
Furthermore, at the completion of his secondary education, he went to Lagos where he joined his brother in-law in his business, while waiting for admission into the university. He performed very well in business and impressed his in-law; Chief Peter Okafor, who wished he would be his business partner. In view of this Chukwudi remained in business venture between 1995 - 1999. He demonstrated great skills in business until one day when he felt he ought to respond to the vocation of being a pastor in God’s vineyard.
Nevertheless, after been convinced of the authenticity of this vocation by his master he freely allowed him to respond to this divine call. Chukwudi never concealed his decision of becoming a religious from me as his mother. He wrote me and disclosed his intention of joining the religious life. As a mother I surrendered to the will of God and helped him to realize his mission. He came home to make enquiries on how to join the religious life. I took him to Rev. Fr. Dara C.S.SP a Holy Ghost priest who was my parish priest at Uromi-Edo state,who directed him on how to gain admission into the Holy Ghost Congregation on December, 1998.
Rev Fr. Sylvester Chukwudi Oyeka never enjoyed his father as a grown child, he was only a year and five months old when his father Mr. Joseph Chukwuma Oyeka died. He was beside his father’s sick bed and witnessed the blessing of his departing father together with his elder sister Dr. Ngozi Okafor, while his father could no longer talk but only made signs. He must have prayed for the realization of what Chukwudi is today. I remain grateful to God for making his wishes come into fruition today in the life of Chukwudi. May God be blessed.
He made his perpetual commitment in the congregation on 22nd August, 2009 and was raised to the diaconate order on 28th November, 2009. Sylvester as a Youngman likes reading novel of heroes and he enjoys ludo and volleyball.
