I'm an indie author for more than 20 years. It began as a way to lessen the boredom of extensive business travel. Writing novels became a hobby and I queried publishers now and then to no avail. POD came along and I went with Amazon after prettying up my old manuscripts. My stuff is mainly satire and comedy.
It's an easy area to write about given the human condition.
