Or even who the enemy might be. Much of my writing is formed by my fairly rural upbringing but also my travels among some remote places and obscure people. I have a keen eye for the bizarre although capturing such in words can be elusive. Am always being encouraged to inject more of my emotion into the narrative - working on that but detached observation does tend to come from all those years writing for obscure, uniformed audiences.
