The Immortals, a novel, will be available November 11, 2015. In 2006, I found myself living thirty-miles south of Canada in a tiny village called Sackets Harbor on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario with no friends, no family, and no knowledge of the ‘real’ Army and its nuances. My husband deployed to Iraq for what was supposed to be 12-months but because of The Surge ended up being a 15-month deployment. It was during the three years in Sackets Harbor that I befriended the strongest women I’ve ever known (The Diva War Brides), met courageous soldiers and uplifting wounded men, brooked my fear in the face of adversity, and went through a profound personal transformation. My first novel, The Immortals, is based on those three years. I was born Victoria Freeman Dukehart in Baltimore, Maryland in 1970, when Richard M. Nixon was President, US troops invaded Cambodia, The Beatles broke up, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin died, Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and John Updike’s Bech: A Book were published, George C. Scott won the Best Actor Oscar for his turn as General Patton but refused the gold statuette, and the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series (4-1). I received my Bachelor of Arts in English with a concentration in creative writing from Skidmore College. I live in West Palm Beach with my husband, daughter, two big dogs, and two cheeky cats.
