I write in the naturalist/realist tradition and claim Thomas Mcguane, Pam Houston and Ethan Canin as inspiration. If you like their work, odds are you'll like mine. My latest title is the story collection Borders and Boundaries, published by Cold River Press in 2020. It's a contemporary western, with ten linked stories that amount to a novel if read in sequence. Links to all my books can be found here on this site. An earlier collection, Forgive Me, Father, also from Cold River Press, came out in 2014. Like Borders and Boundaries, it includes stories that previously appeared in various journals and magazines, plus two that were held back just for the book.  I'm also author of the novel What You Wish For, a 2012 family saga dealing with the issue of assisted dying. Still, it's not all grim. There are laughs too, along with courtroom drama, quirky characters and three non-traditional love stories. My other work is all over the map, from the rural and wholesome novel Belonging (2006) set fifty years in the past, to the darker and contemporary Forgive Me, Father. Sorry, there are no rules. I write only what grabs me, though my intent is to grab readers as well. In winning a 2011 national award, my story "Liar's Dice," a version of which is posted here in full, drew an accolade I hope applies to everything I write: “...does a great job of creating an atmosphere without getting bogged down in long descriptions. Listed as a Notable Alumn, Squaw Valley Community of Writers. Winner, for his story "Liar's Dice," of a national award in Scratch Fiction Magazine's 2011 competition. More recently, Bill's stories "Grouse Ridge" and "Forgive Me, Father," were nominated for the 2012 Pushcart Prize. Both are part of his 2014 story collection from Cold River Press, which is also titled "Forgive Me, Father."
