Growing up in Atlantic City I was dazzled by the infinite variety of  pleasures, but none more than the beach and ocean. As soon as school let out, I was at the beach every day from morning til almost dinner bell. During those summer years I was enamored by the lifeguards who I viewed as bronzed gods. It was especially thrilling to watch them during one of their many rescues, when they had to battle frightening waves to reach a bather who had gone too far in testing the limits of Father Neptune. I became an unofficial mascot during those years and would gladly perform any duty required of me. In return the guards would take me out in the boat where they taught me to row and throw a donut (life preserver). I was allowed to sit on the stand where I learned how to spot dangerous ocean conditions. These guys were very generous and treated me like a little brother. Is it any wonder I vowed, in coming of age, I would make it my main goal to become a part of this illustrious organization?
