Lamaro Laker grew up in Africa in a warm and playful single-parent family. She studied languages, literature and Psychology at Kenyatta University in Kenya, the Victoria University of Manchester in the U.K. and the University of Konstanz in Germany. Before becoming critically ill, she had years of experience as a teacher of modern languages in secondary schools, a school counsellor, a lecturer in Psychology, a therapist and a researcher. A career break due to illness and recovery allowed her to rediscover her first passion - writing. Lamaro likes to write memoirs and fiction cut very close to real life and to experiences she has had herself. She brings to her writing not just her professional experiences, but also her personal life experiences with chronic illness, forced migration, migration, adversity and its management. Lamaro lives in Germany with her husband, on the shores of the lake of Konstanz, but she also cultivates close ties to her homeland in Africa. Lamaro Laker is also actively involved in therapy and research, and has published scientific articles under the name Lamaro P. Onyut (Ph.D) She and others are in the process of setting up the Centre for Studies in Traumatic Stress, Mbarara University of Science and Technology. Some proceeds from her work will go towards building capacity and facilitating research at these institutions.

A story by Lamaro Laker, A Light Matter, under the name Patience Onyut, is included in an anthology that has been in use to teach English in Kenyan secondary schools since the 1990s.
