Her first novel, Buffalo Calf Road Woman: The Story of a Warrior of the Little Bighorn, based on a true story, won the prestigious Western Heritage Award for Best Western Novel in 2006 (an honor she shares with James Michener, Barbara Kingsolver and Larry McMurtry). Studied the classics, literature and philosophy, taught humanities and women's studies in college before starting a gender issues consulting/training firm. Influenced by the women's movement, her travels around the world, and her experiences as a first generation daughter of Italian immigrants. 

An award-winning trainer, Dr. Agonito has been honored by the U.S. Small Business Administration, the New York State Education Dept., Women and Minorities in Business Magazine, Robert Earl McConnel Foundation and others. She holds a Ph.D. from Syracuse University and is frequently quoted in national media such as Mademoiselle, New Woman, Parents, Marie Claire, Christian Science monitor, Human Resources Professional, Across the Board and others. Dr. Agonito has appeared as a gender issues expert on over 60 national and regional radio and television talk shows.

The book is a joint project with Joseph Agonito who researched the book.
