My dad left this little bit of advice for me when I was a teenager.  I have tried to remember it and live by it.  I trust that you can relate:

If you, your lips would save from slips, these things observe with care

Of whom you speak, to whom you speak, or how or when or where

If you, your ears would save from jeers, these things keep mildly hid
