Patrick John Rose was born on board his father's (Captain John Wesley Rose of ship, the Marguerite, off the coast of New York on January 29, 1872. Patrick claimed to have sailed for more than 30 years (also as a Captain) and professed to be a sailor, prospector, miner, cowpoke, and oil worker.
