Memmott grew up in Southern Utah, received his B.A. in English from Brigham Young University and his M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of California at Irvine. Major influences include Joyce, Faulker, and Fitzgerald (probably in that order) among others. Taught literature and writing courses at the University of Cincinnati and the University of Connecticut for about 15 years. Now on the periphery of the motion picture industry in marketing.
