 Years of newspaper work prepared me for actual writing, even  though  I used to make up fiction stories about my favorite characters in my head.  I didn't actually get to fiction writing until I was in high school, and then they were only short-shorts which I scribbled down and hid somewhere.

Reading is a huge help to the would-be writer. If you love to read, sample a bit of everything--it helps you with your grammar, too!
