I grew up along the US-Mexican border in Texas and Southern California. We moved frequently due to my father's job with the US Customs & Immigration Service. My sisters and I had a strict Christian upbringing thanks to my mother's unswerving faith. We saw harsh scenes of poverty and misery in every new place we went. I wondered why there was such disparity between different groups of people and such a cold lack of general concern for the welfare of all involved.
