I was born on a farm near Frederick, SD, early in the morning of a hot, dry day in August, 1939, weighing in at about four pounds. Those in attendance were the doctor, my paternal grandmother, and my father.
As the first-born child of a school teacher, my mother's priority when I started school was that I would learn to read.
