A simple reflection, or perhaps not, about the human condition. An extention of my last two postingd, each in its own way...
it’s an ancient design
six boards to form a box.
reaching back through the ages
echoes of the spice road
and nomad’s tents
lord’s keeps and sailing ships
treasures of the Spanish main
Pandora’s box,
and the Ark of the Covenant
the Viking sea chest that
doubled as a rower’s bench.
Toolboxes, toy boxes, and
strong boxes
boxes for blankets
and biscuits
and the wealth of nations
even the woods are magic:
holly, sandalwood, and teak;
acacia, linden, and yew;
rowan, and cedar; oak,
mahogany, and pine;
hickory and walnut.
one proof against witches
others sacred to the gods
another, the bane of insects.
mine is less impressive,
but sitting on the workbench
it marks my connection
with workers down the ages.
solidarity of calloused hands
slow careful thought and
slivers
it’s an ancient design

This is outstanding, John. Some things stand alone and really need no revision to their simple perfection. There is a special beauty in all things if we just take the time to appreciate them.

Oh I love this, John! Reminds me of my father, a heck of a carpenter in his own right-not by trade but love. The lessons you teach us about looking at common things in uncommon ways are well worth learning. I have a collection of small, old wooden boxes. They hold a mystery and history of which you've expressed beautifully here...
