Poem Artwork

tell me how the grass smells after a summer rain
then tell me how the sun streams and eases a muscle pain
then speak of all the different songs a mockingbird can bring
then tell me if you can... in your step is there a spring
the leap that comes in a pace just when your true love beckons
the trapeze swing that clings to love...just where is it you reckon
you think it's lost in a place where sun is outside waiting
or an office or a cubicle where work is always stretching
hours upon hours making sense of money
what's the point when life is short...what's the matter honey
tell me what you're missing...living life this way
you can't have many treasures if you pay and never play
take a look at country... a rusting john deere tractor
smell new hay and take a nap...make laziness a factor
add rosiness to your cheeks and life to all your tears
work to live and not the opposite...add more value to your years
keep it up you'll miss the boat...the meaning of your birth
you can make it stretch much further and double all your worth
take it easy on your spirit...it too could use some sun
come on out and play with me... let's make a life of fun
i love you afterall ... and funny as it seems...
you can't possibly love living when you short change all your dreams.

Let's go pick some cotton. On the other hand, let's let the cotton pickin' machine do it while we go fishin'.

A quote of Albert Camus came to mind when reading your poem:

"In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer"

It seems the winter with all its impending threats that is about to take posession of this world, is powerless against a tiny streak of summer that bears within itself conditions to make life a festival of dreams. It reminds me of an experience my father had when he was forced to struggle for life in a pitch dark night; he was able to see whereever he looked like it was day. Such is the power of the Light, that effortlessly dwarfs the conjurings of the dark. Impossible exists merely inside our heads, along with limit and paradox - these things are no part of the realm of the Light.

We must learn to live on 90 percent of whatever our senses gift us with, so very analogous to stopping and smelling the roses, and then picking the petals to dry to put into an old-time rose-scented jar filled with rose petals, glycerin, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves. This poem is so filled with creative imagination that is magic and of the truest and highest meaning of the word, Susan.

AMEN!

Life seems out of kilter at times for sure, and it seems that sometimes we miss so much, striving to survive, but still . . . thank God for life in all of its complexities and trials.

Dear Susan, never rest your pen!

Outstanding poetry Susan that calls the timid soul forth to explore new as well as forgotten vistas of the heart…Love the pic as it reminds me of a field on the outskirts of the wide spot in the road just outside Aiken, SC……

SO….
“tell me how the grass smells after a summer rain”?

Rich and clean with a faint whisper of wintergreen.

“then tell me how the sun streams and eases a muscle pain”?

From golden rays of secret joy, to ease the joints, to bring out youths boy.

How is it that we get so involved in what it takes to live day to day, we forget how little time we really have and how important it is that we take advantage of what time we have to enjoy all it has to offer...most especially the things in life which are priceless and intangible. Your final line was such a binding clincher...and your word, my friend, is always a joy to read.

Taylor
