Tell me how the grass smells after a summer rain?
Then tell me how the sun streams and eases a muscle pain?
Then speak of all the different songs a mockingbird can bring
Then tell me if you can, in your step, is there a spring?
The leap that comes in a pace just when your true love beckons
The trapeze swing that clings to love, just where is it, you reckon?
You think it's lost in a place where sun is outside waiting ?
Or an office, a cubicle where work is always stretching
Hours upon hours making sense of money
What's the point when life is short, what's the matter honey?
Tell me what you're missing, living life this way
You can't have many treasures if you pay and never play
Take a look at country, a rusting John Deere Tractor
Smell new hay and take a nap, make laziness a factor
Add rosiness to your cheeks and life to all your tears
Work to live, not the opposite, add detail to all your years
Keep it up you'll miss the boat, the meaning of your birth
You can make it stretch more today and double all your worth
Take it easy on your spirit, it too could use some sun
Come on out and play with me, add years to all your fun.
I love you and afterall, funny as it seems
You can't possibly love living when you short change all your dreams
Thanks for this lovely reminder to live life today. It's funny you mention a rusting John Deere tractor; I also have one in a poem I wrote too.
"Work to live, not the opposite, add detail to all your years"
Well done Susan!

Lines like Beauty and Truth personified sitting together on a hillside delighting in the shapes of clouds glittering in sunlight. A great Sunday afternoon read. Much gratitude,

I hear you. Am agreeing with every word. In the "After Holidays" time, some of lus get into a downer, but you empty the chairs and benches very effectivelly!

You are so right, Susan...all we have is today to take advantage of...so here's to times for rosey cheeks and following dreams.I'm ready.

Very wise poem, Susan! Life is for living and there has not been one person laying in bed, facing thir own death, who said that they wish that they had spent more time working and less time enjoying life. We get caught up in the rat-race and confuse our needs with our wants. We become a slave to a lifestyle instead of spending our time drinking up all the beauty that surrounds us. Life is short and getting shorter by the minute...ENJOY LIFE!!
Take care,
Sherry

Well said, Susan! Maybe it's my age speaking (retirement does end the need for life in the "fast lane") but I think smelling the roses (and new-mown hay) is more important than all this effort to help someone else build their fortune. I really enjoyed this one!
Oh yesssss.... Can't WAIT for all that new-mown hay... Today is my late mother's birthday and she would have been thrilled at the spring nip in the air. Susan, you are a master at whatever form of versifying you choose and totally in control always of your subject. On top of that, you consistently set the appropriate tone and direction for the mood of your work... in short, you are the consummate artist. Have to agree absolutely with your Emerson quote, though it is my too high a spirit that continually encumbers me with all my old nonsense!! :)) Wherever I go, there I am.... LOL K xx
This exceptional book, Celebrating the Gift of Being Alive, has the perfect thoughts and words for birthdays, graduations, engagements, marriages, and any life celebration or family tradition.
When two men hit the reset button and decide to go out looking for the good in the world, they not only find it but also a lot more.
P.S. The title is listed on Amazon under Look for Something Good by Robert Drews (not by Robert H. Drews)

Powerful line that resonates too uncomfortably with past experience.
Beats Emerson.
