I wrote this in 2000. Look at us all here today. It's gotten worse. Apathy is killing all of us as sure as our hearts are beating while reading this.Let's do something.I challenge my peers to write about this earth, our home. We can start right here at Author's Den and that would be one step.

Think of this earth as a body
The Rain Forest being the heart
The threat of a deadly virus
Slowly tearing her apart
The rain mixed with pollution
Each tear acids of pain
Sliding the mountains downhill
Scarring her pretty terrain
Trees being mowed down for paper
Baring her form to the sun
Drying her skin into wrinkles
Leathering under our gun
The constant threat of this battle
Her scars gone to the bone
Thoughtless dangerous pollution
Opening up the Ozone
She , who once was a beauty
Slowly eaten alive
Tortures of man's only duty
Jackknifed into this dive
She's going downhill faster
Than we, who believe, can plant trees
She hunches her back to disaster
When more of us need to believe
She really needs a make-over
Her body needs the repairs
We have to complete in our lifetime
The beauty that we took over years
Give back to her heart it's true beat
The one that makes us believe
That she who gives everything to us
Won't have to wear pain on her sleeve
We need to think of this lady
To give and not falter her trust
We need to think of her blessings
Think hard of what's under her crust
Let's feel ,as I do, her pain
To live each day close to life
To feel the cries of the Forest
To make a good go for her strife
It won't take long to tender
It can happen if we attempt
To pull our resources together
The Rain Forest is giving us hints
Her heart is in need of a by-pass
We clogged her arteries and veins
With polluted fires of shaven forms
Apathized her answer to rains
Now she sobs to us with a pity
Very few hear her silent fears
The heart of the Rain Forest is weeping
We have minutes...while we took from her
...years

Reminds me of my, The Hower Monkey. Dylan said it long ago, 'When will they ever learn.'

a profoundly disturbing poem offering insight to the man-made travails of the rain forest ... across from where i live, is the NY Botanical Gradens ... there, there is the largest research center on the northern and southern hemispheres developing pharmaceuticals from plants that were harvested from the rain forest ... another consequence of losing the flora of the rain forest is the medicines that can be synthesized from yet unknown species of plants ... again, a timely and thought provoking poem capturing the dilemma of destroying such a important resource and a natural wonder ...

There is great conflict between computerised projections and what scientists actually believe, Susan. Because computers predict exaggerated scenarios based purely on suppositions, the media - with its nose always sniffing for sensational - publishes the computerised version and ignores official reports. A recent UN commisioned scientific report found no evidence at all for global warming: http://www.melaniephillips.com/diary/?p=1457

Much of our anxiety is manufactured and fed to us by irresponsible agencies. They are accountable to no one but their share holders.

Sleep easy.

Sobering and discouraging.

The planet indeed has a man-made fever! Me-thinks too that we have passed the infamous PNR. A wake-up call indeed Belle-o-the-chill-realities.

This paints a gloomy picture about our planet, for sure, Susan! Wow, to see it in black and white like this really makes the point that we have to do something fast. Thank you for the URL.

Susan,

"We have minutes...while we took from her
...years" <------right here, sums it up in heartbreaking detail.

The damage we've done may never be undone: God help us. You pen our condemnation in perfect verse. Thank you! Deeply moving, thought provoking write, excellently expressed.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

I heard they found gold there and so stopped cutting trees. I don't know if this is true but I hope so. The damage is that they did not plant trees to replace the old ones but converted the land into farms. So great damage has been done. Victor

I think we took from her much more than years; we've callously plundered and tortured her very heart and soul, and yet so many today still refuse to believe. And often now, I wonder if it's already too late to right our wrongs.

I hope many read this one, Susan.

You are so right with this one Susan, and not only are the equatorial rain forests endangered we have only to fly over the mountains in our own Canada to see the extinction by clear cutting of large swaths of our own forests leaving hundreds of miles of scars as a legacy to our children and I have no doubt the same is happening in the USA. It is time again for the everyday Joe and Jane to raise theri voice as you have to call for enough is enough. Well done my dear hearted friend.

Fine write. I lived in what was once a Rain Forest in St. Croix. After "Hugo" tore off the canopy it became grassy. It may never go back to the form it took in the 80's when I first saw it. It was only a few square miles tucked into St. Croix's hills. Imagine how long it will take the Amazon and other RF's in the world to recover...sigh
Love you,
simon
