BEGINNING TO BEGIN AGAIN

The stranger was born in Michigan
where he spent most of his years,
but eventually he moved on
trying to out run the tears.
He’d lost his wife to cancer
right after she’d turned forty
he’d tried to go on with life
but wasn’t feeling very sporty.
She’ was originally from West Virginia
by way of eastern Kentucky.
Eventually she moved to Michigan
but that’s not where they got lucky.
Many years would pass
each would live lots of life.
She would eventually lose her husband
just as the stranger had lost his wife.
She had married at an early age
to her only high school sweetheart.
They had that in common,
it’s how the stranger also got his start.
Her man was heading off to war
in a place called Vietnam.
He returned a decorated warrior
and they began to begin again.
They packed and moved to Michigan,
forged a brand new start,
made promises to each other
never again to be apart.
He went to work for Ford
while she worked at the local bank.
Soon they had a baby boy,
then gave the Lord their thanks.
Seven happy years passed,
they were blessed with another child.
The little boy now had a sister
and she wasn’t nearly as wild.
Eventually she left the bank
went to work at the school.
They lived just across the street,
it seemed just way too cool.
The stranger also worked in a bank,
but he retired in 1988,
no longer caring to deal with
the life that seemed his fate.
For several years he wandered,
he didn’t have a plan.
Then one day a light came on
and he decided to begin again.
He packed and moved to Florida
to be nearer his two boys.
He joined a new circle of friends
seeking to find new joys.
Life just kept on happening,
one day her kids were grown.
Only a matter of time now,
til they’d both be on their own.
They bought a place in Florida
it was all part of the plan.
One day they’d leave their jobs
as they began to begin again.
Things went along quite smoothly
eventually they made the move.
They both retired early,
with nothing left to prove.
Their lives had been simply lived
neither of them complaining.
Too soon, the diagnosis.
Too short, the time remaining.
The devastating feeling of loss
may never be explained,
but you get up again next morning
and begin to begin again.
Months turned into years.
She was living through the hurt.
Eventually she became receptive
to the idea someone might flirt.
Finally she joined a dating service,
even agreed to several dates.
She was looking for companionship,
not really for a “mate.”
The stranger joined that same service
just as her membership was expiring.
Hers was one of the first names
he ended up acquiring.
She sent him a “WINK”
he responded the very next day.
With that, “a budding relationship”
began to get underway.
Two strangers now in Florida,
known as the Sunshine State.
One day they met on MATCH.COM,
soon after, they started to date.
She’d just recently lost her spouse,
for him, over 20 years it had been.
They shared much common ground
and together, began to begin again.
Between a graveyard in South Florida
and another in Mid Michigan,
they’d both been biding their time
each beginning to begin again.
