All the world's a stage,
and all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
and one man in his time plays many parts. -W Shakespeare

There On The Stage, It's Your Turn To Live

Life is theatre, we watch and preform
Eyes on the stage, when tickets are torn
Seated with strangers, seated with friends
Applause for the play, applause for pretend

Scripted or ad lib, attention is rapt
Gifting to all with talent and craft
Different skins worn through every play
Characters birth in foot lights of ray

Passionate voices reaching entwined
To old or new, for those of still mind
Connections, or anger, laughter  or pain
A chance to pretend, and yet remain sane

All that we get, is all that they give
On those sweet hours, through them we live
Upon their words, music and song
Spellbound we sit, through them we belong

After the curtain, and the applause
Lights from the ceiling, reality flaws
Out through the lobby into the night
What might we carry, in our mind's sight

Images stored  in memory's hold
Between our curtains of damask and gold
Enriched by performance other's have learned
Seen with the soul, felt and discerned

Perhaps next performance you are on stage
Audience quiet, rapt and engaged
Are you rehearshed, or do you ad lib
There on the stage, it's YOUR turn to give

Applause!

This is not so much about the theatre, but, how we live and give

The more we give, the better we live. Every role is important. May we each play our parts well.

May this Season of Light bless your heart,

Where have I been that I haven't read your poetry? You have captured the stage with eye of a sage. I just watched The Great Debaters and nearly cried--Academy Awards? I Am Legend intrigues me.

She kinda looks a bit like the poseur what I am, don't you think??!! :)) xx GREAT analogy, Dahling, and sure appeals to a drama queen like me... Mwahmwahs... heaps of them! Wannabe Kate xx or Kangaroo Kate (wallaby...) Pssst... I've lost my way to the Stable...

Sometimes I imagine people donning their masks, instead of jackets, before leaving home. You've captured that image perfectly with this piece. You also took me back to the feeling I get when I'm in the audience, at a play. Live actors seem to engage the mind more intimately than a movie or show. A fantastic write! Thought provoking:)

As an amateur actor and a professional character of real life I know how this poem feels. There is somthing so complete about having to stand out from the crowd and do what must be done or say what must be said. In life as in acting some things must follow a specific plan where others can flow and ebb to the desires of the performer. Great analogy of life my friend.

WE emulate all the time much as a child learns from whom he watches. Life is a stage and we preformers are constantly on cue. I know that watching my grandson pick things up and reacting to the attention he is getting makes him a huge HAM!

Beautiful write.
Life is a stage. We each must ask what part we play.

You really worked this one to a refined gem. Excellent writing. Yep, to live is to perform every day; there's always SOMEBODY watching even when we're alone. Happy holidays, PAX

You spoiled my fun in explaining that the poem was about life instead of actors onstage with your comment at the end . . . I forgive you . . . Drat! . . . You penned this very well, I especially like the rhyming, it was excellent . . .

Oh the parts I've played to hide this tender, introverted "me" inside. When I got older, my facade crumbled. Playing yourself is the toughest role to play because it's one hundred percent ad lib.
Your poems stick to the insides of my mind.
How do you do that?!
