MICROWAVE SOCIETY

If only I could go back, to life so smooth and slow
When patience was a virtue, from which rewards would grow
When things were made with loving hands, and skills were cherished
arts
And every item held a part, of one soul's deepest heart

Did we have it better then, in days from echoes past?
Have our wants and needs eclipsed, or merely now contrast?
Has our intellect expanded, and our maturity regressed?
Has sophistication, dulled appreciation, to what once did impress?

Has a sense of urgency become a vital force?
In our quest for progress, have we strayed off life's course?
We want instant gratification, like infants at the breast
Our hunger never satisfied, .......denied contented rest

Make it better, get it now, a picoseconds too long!!!
The race goes to the swiftest, while dreamers tag along
Maybe if we stopped and looked deep within our souls
We'd find our miraculous existence, the grandest achievement extolled

What I like about the quiet places is that no one is there. You can reflect for an hour or a day. They are all crowding around the microwave, watching their popcorn pop. Too bad for them.

Excellent. Bigger and faster doesn't make it better. I wrote a poem a while ago called "The Microwave Oven Blues". In 1993 George Ritzer introduced the concept of McDonaldization, which he characterized as "the process by which the principles of the fast-food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American society as well as the rest of the world." McDonaldization eventually produces a society in which creativity, intelligent insight, individuality, and real human contact are more or less absent.
