This is one of the first things I ever wrote.

Almond Eyes

Almond eyes with golden flecks he sensed across the room
But she was lost in her own thoughts and gazed upon the moon
She felt his look and turned her head as if someone had called
And saw astranger standing still, his back against the wall

She never saw his face before, but felt such kindness there
He paralyzed, by almond eyes, he knew his heart was bared
Suddenly they were so close, all others disappeared
Destiny propelled them, to seek each other near

He bowed and introduced himself, this man from distant shores
She did not understand his sounds but hung on every word
They laughed in some embarrassment, and awkwardness was there
Time stood still, and ticked away, and neither of them cared

They used their hands and faces, for this acquaintance new
And understood each other well, as future lovers do
Soon he began to call on her, the best part of his day
And learned each other's language, and patterns of wordplay

They strolled thru El Mercado, and browsed through all the stands
She taught him names of all the fruits, he'd eat out of her hands
Fine black silk, and flowers, caught his eye one day
A present for his lady, he loved in every way

He draped the shawl around her back, and crossed it by her heart
He kissed her for the first time, behind and old oxcart
They lived in their own world, a population two
Was it Lunes or Domingo, they didn't have a clue

Hand in hand, they strolled the shore, bare feet in the sand
They knew what was important, in this their own dreamland
But time was not on their side, nor schedules and rules
And helpless men, worked in hot fields, for masters that were cruel

His land across the ocean began to grow apart
And he knew in his deepest soul that he would soon depart
He said, shortly I must leave, to go to my homeland
But promise I'll be back, just try to understand

I've things I must attend to, my ship, my land, my home
There's unrest in my city, that I cannot condone
Heart ripped in two, she turned her face and couldn't look at him
Her smile locked and frozen, its countenance so grim

Oh stay with me my Charleston man!! Your land is torn by war!!!
Make Espana your new home! How could you want for more??
Her almond eyes were filled with tears, for dangers lay ahead
She choked back sobs and bit her lips, until she knew they bled

But she respected his honor, and knew she was his life
He promised to come back to her, and make her his own wife
That night he stayed with her and held her in his arms
He kissed her every tear away, and got lost in her charms

Come morning they were both so drained, and lost in sorrow deep
But at high tide he'd sail to see what Dixie reaped
Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months
She'd walk along the beaches, its horizon an affront

She grew brown as a gypsy, black curls flew in the breeze
A silent prayer por Dios for her sailor's safety
At night she's stain her throat, with the blood of grapes
Her fear for him a prison that she could not escape

Her family thought her mad, beyond deranged for sure
This senorita once so promising, so cultured, and demure
Each second lasts a million years, manana never comes
But in her dreams she'd see his face...and smile a welcome

If only I had lain with him, then child I might have
But chaste was our last night, we slept together clad
Not a letter came through, not a single word
She grew apart from all life, and with the moon conferred

And sat on the veranda, and waited for her man
And cursed the politicians that governed in Charleston
One day as was her habit, she walked down to the sea
She heard the winds cruel whisper, that made her feel lonely
But then she stopped and listened, and trust began to start
And saw her captain run towards her....and clutch her to his heart!!!

It's nice to see your work on this site . . . but it is worthy of a hard-cover publication. i.e. you deserve to be paid for it. You are a very gifted and insightful lady.
