Ode to Autumn Glories

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

An ode to the beauty of autumn and the often times drastic changes in the weather as autumn becomes winter. Author's note: This is my first attempt in writing an ode of this style, so please feel free to critique at will.

Poem Artwork

The beauty of the autumn leaves
As fall coolness arrives
Embraces ‘til the soul believes
The fate before its eyes
In this time, peacefulness is found
But yet, the winter creeps
Into the forefront of the day
Dark clouds loom all around
While on the grass, an acorn sleeps
To keep the cold at bay.

The earthen floor, once crisp and green
Will turn a brownish hue
The novel newness that was seen
In spring will soon be through
Replaced by perfect beads of ice
On maple trees, stripped bare
Perched on a hillside, once alive
With birds and small field mice
That went for shelter from the air
In their will to survive.

The autumn displays its wonder
For a mere moment in time
Soon the leaves will relax under
Raw conditions, in their prime
While we will embrace the changes
We shall wish for days of yore
And our own respected stories
Of our personal exchanges
With the world, outside our door
Once filled with sweet autumn glories.

Very inspiring interpretation of autumn, flowing with beauty and grace. Just like Ronald Hull, I also miss the vast differences of the seasons...they seem to be flowing together.
God Bless,
Sharon

I love autumn, and I am usually ready for it when it finally makes its grand entrance. All the flowers of summer have gone lanky and the stark heat of the desert has parched all the blooms and sucked the moisture it could, from every living thing. Then autumn comes and turns the ugliness of the summer's end into intense fire and colors the world in a way that any paintbrush would envy. Nice poem, Jill.
Take care,
Sherry

It is interesting that our inspiration for autumn comes, if at all, in the dead of winter. I miss the sharpness of seasons, Jill.

This form created by Keats, known as KEATSIAN and ENGLISH ODE is written in iambic pentamenter with rhyming -- ABABCDECDE FGFGHIJHIJ KLKLMNOMNO in a total of three STROPHES.

"Ode to Autumn Glories" presented the correct rhyme scheme - except the first stanza, ARRIVES/EYES, second and fourth lines; -- and of course, The absence of proper poetic meter.

Better to leave this just as an ODE without KEATS' form, for it is
a wonderful composition abounding in poetic excellence.

I have enjoyed the reading of "Ode to Autumn Glories".

I salute You, Poet.

And a glorious ode this is, dear Jill. I dare not commenting on the form (not my field) but the essence of this composition is that of true, magnificent Poetry! Bravo!
