This Promise

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

A few days ago, I was watching a televised baseball game, during which a woman proposed marriage to her boyfriend. The commentators, broadcasting the game, then began a discussion about whether this practice is an accepted norm, essentially determining the woman's proposal to her boyfriend was odd. This poem was inspired by the event and written as a proposal that a woman could share with her eternal love.

I promise my heart shall remain yours to keep
Even if each tomorrow brings hardship to reap
These moments I cherish are not lived in vain
And if given the chance, I would live each again
You have brought me laughter, when days were without
You have been my companion; of this I’ve no doubt
My life is much better when you’re by my side
Together, we’ve conquered each challenge in stride.

We have risen over each valley and hill
In search of the dreams that we’ve hoped to fulfill
Some dreams have rewarded, while others have passed
Yet, no one could value the worth we’ve amassed
Our riches may not be of silver or gold
But, each shares a story of strong will untold
Our lives are a narrative, written in stone
As proof of the unyielding union we’ve known.

I promise my heart, until this world is through
My time would mean nothing if not spent with you
These moments I treasure would not be as bright
If I did not have you to bestow each with light
You have been a beacon of unending praise
Thus I hereby pledge, both for now and always
I will stand beside you, as your friend for life
If only you’ll have me as your loving wife?

This is awesome at a baseball game. Hope he's not no passive that she'll regret what she had vowed that day. This is beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

How can any man with love in his heart be anything but thrilled to receive such a poetic entreaty?

Surely he would know that from the woman who felt these emotions and who cared enough to present them to him--openly or in private--he would be receiving the gift of a lifetime.

Why, O why are so many of us men so insensitive, so caught up in being burly and tough that our hearts become scarred and unfeeling?

To the unattached ladies of the den, I say this: Look for the man who treats his mother with love and respect, the man who might shed a tear in hearing these loving and moving words, and you will know that you have found the man that God sent you.

Love is a gift from God to be cherished forever. Amen!

Thank you, Jill, for sharing these important thoughts.
And so nicely done, too!

Richard

Jill, isn't true love simply wonderful??? Always a little better when it lasts, rather than being a passing fancy. Enjoyed.

Be safe,
Karen

Ever since I first read you. All your works are gentle and loving.
Over here, a woman can only propose on a leap year...

Your style sure brings down the BP, you should record it, I for one would buy it.. Another poem bearing a delicate, and lovable write..

Not many men would use a poem to propose. You've shown the way.
