A poem about a "not-so-perfect," real world fairy tale.

A long time ago in a faraway place
There lived a fair maiden, rich in poise and grace
Her heart, like a compass, acted as her guide
Yet, she longed to have her dear prince by her side
The prince was a rebel in so many ways
Great trouble and torment surrounded his days
But, the maiden’s love remained humble and true
Much more than the unruly prince ever knew.

Each morning, she strolled through the garden, alone
Thinking of the prince she hoped to call her own
Her love for him echoed throughout every song
But he never saw her, as she walked along
The thought of him led her heart to skip a beat
The images left in her mind, soft and sweet
Yet, each evening came without an answered plea
That love for the maiden and prince was to be.

As time moved ahead, the prince began to change
The maiden saw his acts as hopeless and strange
His rebellious ways had continued to stand
And weighed heavily upon all of the land
The maiden’s heart began to travel away
From the prince she vowed to cherish, come what may
Yet, he never noticed; he was never there
To see that the maiden had reason to care.

One day, a fair maiden’s heart had hoped to find
True love with a prince who proved careless and blind
The maiden let go of her hopes and her dreams
Content to live solo, beneath the moonbeams
The prince carried on, always landing in doom
He suffered until the day he found his tomb
Yet, both lived the lives they were destined to know
In a faraway land, such a long time ago.
