When troubles come,
They cannot be declined;
When they go,
They are never detained.
Alas! Most people think
That to nourish the body
Is sufficient to preserve life
And thus avoid troubles;
And when such nourishment
Is not sufficient to preserve
Good things and avoid bad,
What can be done on earth
That will be sufficient?
Though all that men can do
Will be insufficient in the end,
Yet there are things which
They feel they ought to do;
And they do not try
To avoid doing them,
Piling up troubles
On their own heads.
