If a clever man had the power
To enjoy himself in any pursuit,
Could he be kept from doing so?
But if he had not such a power,
Could he so much enjoy himself?
Where are those now whose pursuits
Were bent on showing off themselves,
And those who were determined
That their doings should leave a trace
In the modern history of humanity?

There also are those who shirk
The obligations of great merits
And knowledge: now they rush on
Like a big fire and do not consider
What they're doing, and then they fall
Unable to recover themselves for long.

Though men may stand to each other
In relations of superior and inferior,
Capable and incapable, saint and mundane
That's only but for a certain time --
In a changed age like that at present,
The one of them would not be able
To look down on the other man
With no painful consequences.
