Gold and adventure
Which in the first instance
Drove Columbus,
The greatest sailor-adventurer
Of all times, to seek a route
To India and China
But moored to the New World.
When we begin
To follow that continuity,
We begin to realize
How that Columbus-sailor
With his tradition of discovery
Has been so solidly and
Equitably carried on to us.
And we feel a sort of pity
For both the New and
The Old World -- a pity
That it is not the humanity but
Gold, cupidity, and superprofit
Attracted the Europeans
To the novel American coast.
Yes, it is gold and gain,
Which have bound the Old
And the New World together,
And thrown them
Into the whirlpool of curse,
With not a single human,
But with a tie among them --
In the name the God.
When the ancients first ventured into the next valley because they were starving having eaten everything in the comfort of their home territory, they held rituals to their gods to protect them on a journey into the unknown.
Columbus certainly sought riches and a name for himself in taking a shortcut to India based on what he had learned from Galileo and Copernicus that the church did not believe in. But I believe he was looking for spices and silk rather than gold. And indeed, Columbus found pineapple, coconut, tobacco and other goods, eventually far more valuable than the gold those following him stole.
He got the Queen's blessing, her money and the church to make sure that his journey into the unknown would be safe from all of the monsters shown on the maps of the time. He prayed and he was delivered. The Queen demanded that those simple people would get religion to be obedient.
People would sacrifice themselves for gold even as late as todate. Just look around you how people would still think of America as golden apple of opportunity and despite of what is happening everyone still want to fight to stay there, some lives are lost in the process.
Gold or God, the twain shall never meet. Either we seek gold in the name of earthly glitter, and we seek the light of God that has no need of gold's glitter.
