Oh daisy sweet daisy
How yellow you are
Not known in the jungle
My home, now so far.
They say I'm almost human
But my manners are well bred
I do not steal or fight
As many humans do instead.
You say you all like me
That's not easy to believe
So why the guns that killed my Mum
And made me have to leave?
A Baby Chimp comes to Scotland
Like youngsters from many members of the animal kingdom, innocence abounds. When someone from our own species is not available, we bond with those that are. Your poem is directed towards humans with a message. I certainly hope that it is heeded, because we are supposedly the smartest species and understand our own failure.
Unfortunately, I have been following chimpanzee studies from Jane Goodall onward. It seems that chimpanzee troops are very territorial, and have rigid hierarchical structures where punishments for bad behavior are very severe, including banishment. Clashes between troops can be very violent and deadly, including cannibalizing victims from the other troop. Just like us good old humans. We are very much alike. And, I forgot to mention the aberrant sexual behavior. ;-)
