Attics full of going brown secrets, love letters with a "Return to Sender" across its envelopes, the sun fingers never touch any of those casual hidden mementos...

Poem Artwork

In a drawer of an old chest and covered
by the accumulated powder dust of time
were a few brown letters, faded photos,
a key chain attached to a penknife,
paper clips, pencil stubs and some stamps.

A “Father’s day” present, a tie,
in it’s originally colorful wrappings,
never send, forgotten in its hiding;
an old passport full of estranges seals
from many countries, too far away.

The fading picture of someone younger
showing a pass photo like mug shot
of somebody’s most wanted face,
a flash, and a paper strip with
a two by two promise of travel.

A yellow string holding a brown bundle
pushing back into a corner a very old pen
that answered long ago all this letters,
even signing, many times, with a real name.

A grandfather’s gold pocket watch
without glass and lacking hands,
a sock!, what is it doing there?
why is always one gone missing
from a par traveling together?;

A pale blue deflated pacifier
still holding its ribbon,
the perfume of the crib is gone away,
a silver rattle that could chase silences
when it was shake by the small hands.

A few keys to open old forgotten doors,
nearly effaced names
in discolored valentine cards,
bended thumbtacks, few toothpicks,
a bicycle bell, beer caps and stubs from cinema.

Small pieces of an ever-insoluble puzzle
all of them covered by the dust of time,
and like a rusted hook
holds memories of fishing,
this drawer holds the fragments of one’s life.

I now love this drawer, Georg! Like it was my own... I think each drawer of life holds treasures others don't identify with, because of now-time and pasts. It used to be a roll-topped desk held parts and pieces and the importance of living families in its heart, anymore, old drawers hold only dust. A very touching piece.

Outstanding write Georg
Talk about memorabilia
I have one of those draws
like the one in your picture
That at times I am afraid to open
By the way thats what my work bench
in my garage looks like.....
Thanks for so many forgotten memories
Peace brother

I call this drawer a mueseum of one's life time. Mine was lost in the war when soldiers broke into my house and destroyed all what i treasured since childhood. Fortunately that was after i had fled but still the pain remains alive in my soul as pieces of my life have been lost for good. Thanks dear George for this meaningful poem

It is sometimes a bit of a "rude" awakening when looking through "old" things; they make one realize how much time has passed and how quickly. Nicely done, Georg. Love and peace to you,

I Love "Revisited Fragments of Life" & also partake in this scenario of saving memories, like your words; they are gifts to revisit even if they are;
"covered by the dust of time" <----I Love That Line Georg!

Hello Georg,

Beautiful poem about memories, and yes, a card or letter can bring back the years in an instant, and the photos of family and friends create the scene once more. I enjoyed reading this like it was MY drawer.

So clear description as if we were rooting through this junk drawer and examine the hints of a life and family lived. We all have these drawers both literally and figuratively and you captured the essence of them.

I love how you covered so many areas of life with this write. The part about the Father's Day tie made me laugh, as my husband just barely found my Christmas present that he had hidden... hee, hee, hee... (It became a Valentine's present instead.) I also really loved the analogy at the end of the poem about the rusty hook holding memories of fishing, just like the drawer holds memories of one's life.

Nostalgia, we often wonder why people save the things that they save. Well it is for exactly what your poem states, faded memories of one's life to reflect back on.
Such a powerfully sad poem Georg, but so wonderful to read.
Peace, love, and light,
