I will celebrate my 61st. birthday this month. At my age you find yourself looking back more and more because some of the happiest moments are there. Also, some of your greatest mistakes cloud your wonderful memories. God Knows that and God forgives. Do you?

Unexpected Turns in the Narrow Road

When I was young I had my plans, I thought I was master of my fate

But as I traversed down the narrow road my plans began to fade.

The road had turns but I went straight

Simply because that was the map I had made.

I would not change my plans, I would not retreat.

Only when I found myself lost did I begin to learn

That the best laid plans are sometimes incomplete.

I realized then as I began to discern

That while lost in the woods of life I could defeat

The feeling of hopelessness, not knowing where to turn

Bewildered, confused and completely lost

The sun scorched my skin , a painful sunburn

The wooded way was where I was so I trudged on at any cost.

But wonder of wonders, what should I see

But the edge of the woods as the road turned back to lead me.

I have strayed from that road many times since then

But my Master always led me back to the road again.

Today, I am older and not so likely to stray

I try with more diligence to follow the way.

Where my savior has lead me and I find that I am walking

On higher ground, now and as I walk I am talking

To the one who cares the most for me

The one who will see me through to eternity.

So, my friend if you stray from that long narrow road ahead

Don’t give up but keep your faith in God, instead.

Even the times when you  do miss a turn

These are nothing more than the times when you have lessons to learn

Your poem is a prayer and a story and it seems that the road you speak of brought you to a wonderful peace and serenity. Well done.

Lew, This is one of your best, for sure. A lot of truth expressed here. Yes, we all make mistakes along life's highway, but we soon encounter road-works along the way. Sometimes we tend to ignore the detour signs and just keep going until we end up in a ditch or something worse. Things is, we're awfully lucky that God is patient, for He knows that it is only a matter of time before we back-track on to the straight and narrow. This indeed is a wonderful write, Lew. You are a man blessed with talent and insight. I really enjoy reading your work. Let's have more!

God Bless
Lena

Wonderful words of truth and of those lessons learned, we are to share with others that they may avoid the dark woods in their life.

Lew - I beat you by quite a few years - You are still a young man - Not yet on social security - Guess What!!!!!!I will be 85 and still doing the Lord's Work. God says 'He will keep you as a Lebon Tree by running water, still strong, still willing and still busy.'I am alone but not lonely, 'cause He is with me. I was thinking of the birds on the wire discussing 'where will we fly to today' nothing to carry, not worried about food or bath. Jesus says go to ever house, preaching the Gospel, where you are not welcome shake the dust from your feet and move on. hohoho let's do it
