I Am Your Country

Help me, I beg of you.  Help me for I need your insight.

Being a democracy is not easy, to keep it one must be willing to fight.

I need to know that you care about what I am and what I have become.

I will never be able to stand for long with the same beating of the drum.

Please do not ask what I can do for you, but what you can do for me.

If your interest in me fades and dies I can never keep you free.

I am not hurt if you criticize if it is something that we can mend.

There is nothing unpatriotic about looking for problems to which to tend.

What is unpatriotic is becoming complacent leaving me to believe

That you are no longer interested for it is to your heart that I cleave.

Be concerned about the character of those who would be part of your government.

Ask them to explain what they stand for before your vote is spent.

Please know that your complacency is the cruelest pain to me.

Let not your hearts grow cold or uncaring having given up all hope for me.

Only with your undying love can I remain free from sea to shining sea.  

Pray to God each day that I fall not under the wait of my own corruption.

If this happens no one will remember the values that brought about my inception.

Please keep in mind, my friend that if in corruption I do fall.

My broken heart and soul will be debris covering one and all

So learn about the people who ask you to give them your trust.

Cast your vote and take your stand and do what’ ere you must.

Stand tall and fear not to proclaim the things that you have believed.

If we work together the wondrous dreams of our founding fathers can be retrieved.
