Prayer Evolves

I think it is so wonderful to hear a child pray. But it is even greater to watch them grow into adulthood and realize that the things they prayed for as children were only a part of learning to know the Master better. That is why I wrote the next poem. I truly hope you enjoy it.

Prayer Evolves

When we were young we were taught to say our daily prayers.

They were more like a letter to Santa than about our worries or cares.

Dear God, protect Mommy and Daddy and my Dog named Rover.

We would find ourselves praying for the same things over and over and over.

As we grow older, we hopefully learn to fine tune our devotions.

We praise the Lord and thank the Lord and share with him our emotions.

Our prayers are not repeated pleading for this or for that or whatever.

Our prayers become more a “Thank you Lord,” for I know you leave my side never.

As we grow in the Lord we realize that if we need it, he already knows.

We begin to understand we need not ask for anything and that’s when our faith grows.

Now our prayers are conversations with our greatest and dearest friend.

He will always be there with us and give us strength all the way to the end.

When that end comes to pass, we will learn something more to add to our faith, indeed.

If ever we have asked for anything and he did not provide, it was something we did not need.

So remember when you pray to God, pray like Jesus taught and do not plead.

Our Father who art in Heaven, how holy is your name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done in Heaven and on Earth the same.

Remember when you ask of God, he already knows of what it is you ask.

The greatest gift he gives to us is faith to finish any task.

Beautiful write...this is so true. In my first grade classroom my students say grace daily before going to lunch. It is something that they enjoy, but it is the usual.."God is great, God is good, let us thank him for our food, Amen." Tuesday our principal became ill and passed out in the restroom where he hit his head on the ceramic tile floor and had to be taken to the emergency room, we were unsure of what caused him to pass out, maybe a light heart attack, or stroke..but I told my students to lay their heads down I wanted to call my mom to make contact with our church's prayer chain, so people could begin to pray for our principal. I was so impressed and touched deeply when I hung the phone up and turned around to ask my beautiful students to raise their heads and thank them for their wonderful behaviour, more than half of my class had their hands doubled and was praying for their principal....so it is true prayer does evolve, sometimes sooner than we think. Beautiful write and an inspiration!
Blessings,

What can I say, Lew? Tis another from your loving heart! We have not because we ask not... Jesus said: "Until now, you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask, and you will received and your joy will be complete." John 16:24. Thanks for this one...

God Bless
