This morning I went to the grocery store. There was a lady driving one of those power carts for she obviously could not walk but she drove in the middle of isle so I could not squeeze by. I found myself feeling a little put out. Then she noticed me there and excused herself and moved the cart to the side. As I passed I said thank-you and she smiled. As I thought about this I began to dwell on the fact that we are all in too great a hurry to show courtesy. This is why I wrote this poem.
What Ever Happened
What ever happened to courtesy?
Have we all grown much to busy.
Does it take something away from our self esteem?
If we say please and thank you, does it make us seem
As if we are weak and timid to take the time to say
Things like please, thank-you or give someone a smile each day?
We drive like the other drivers have no heart
In a rat race in which we, ourselves are a part.
Do we think of our neighbor is the guy who lives next door.
But he is someone we would rather ignore.
Why do we feel the need to cut ourselves off from others?
These people are all our sisters and brothers.
If we believe in Christ do we not believe his words?
Do we read the good book but soon forget it afterwards?
If you have found yourself saying yes to what is written above.
You should pray to God to help you cultivate agape love.
Then when you learn to love in his name
You will find the love you receive back is the same.
It is the same love that led Jesus to the cross.
To not live for him would be our greatest loss.
Love ye one another.
Ah Lew, If only we had the guts to obey the two Commandments Jesus left: Love God and love your neighbor as yourself. I can't help but wonder why people don't love themselves. If they did, they would be able to love others just as the Commandment instructs. No love of self, no love for others. All the same, those of us who understand this, must do the right thing, always. You did well, my friend. Thanks for sharing this experience.
Tonight, a resident, whom I had never seen, got on the elevator with my hubby and I. He was carrying two heavy bags filled with groceries. I started chatting with him. When my hubby and I got off the elevator, he said: "Was he a friend of yours." "Nope," I said. "Never saw him before. I was just trying to be courteous."
Lovingly written, Lew. I'd love to see this edited and revised into a more Shakespearian poem (but that's just personal preference; classical versus modern).
I commend you for writing this, AND for even having the inspiration in the grocery story in that situation. You've got a soft, Christ heart :)
